Our office sits at 8820 Columbia 100 Parkway in Columbia, directly off Route 100 near the Columbia and Ellicott City line. For most Ellicott City residents, including those in Ellicott City proper, Turf Valley, Font Hill, and Valley Mede, the drive is roughly ten to fifteen minutes.
That proximity matters more for TMS than it does for most treatments. A course of TMS involves sessions over a period of weeks rather than a single appointment, so the distance between your home or office and the treatment chair is a practical consideration, not a detail. Patients who face a long commute tend to struggle with completing the course, and completing the course is what the outcome data is built on.
Adults with major depressive disorder who have not achieved satisfactory improvement from antidepressant medication in their current episode. This is the primary FDA indication for NeuroStar in adults.
Adults with depression and co-occurring anxiety. NeuroStar is indicated for decreasing anxiety symptoms in adult patients with major depressive disorder who also exhibit comorbid anxiety symptoms. See TMS for anxious depression.
Adults with OCD, for whom NeuroStar is indicated as an adjunct treatment. See TMS for OCD.
Adolescents ages 15 to 21 with major depressive disorder, for whom NeuroStar is indicated as an adjunct treatment. Adolescent TMS is delivered under a physician board certified in child and adolescent psychiatry. See TMS for teens.
Howard County has substantial mental health resources, and Ellicott City residents are generally not short of options for therapy or medication management. Evaluation. A 60 minute evaluation with Dr. Greenberger covering your mental health and psychiatric history.
Motor threshold determination. On your first treatment day, Dr. Greenberger and a certified TMS Treater identify your individual treatment location and dose. Everyone’s anatomy differs, so this is done specifically for you. The visit runs about 60 to 90 minutes and includes your first treatment.
Treatment course. Your coordinates are recorded, so later sessions begin without repeating the setup. Patients remain awake and alert and return to normal activity the same day, including driving.
In a large registry study of NeuroStar TMS patients, 83 percent of those completing the treatment course showed measurable improvement in depression symptoms, and 62 percent no longer met diagnostic criteria for major depressive disorder afterward (Sackeim et al., 2020, Journal of Affective Disorders).
Results vary between individuals. The evaluation with Dr. Greenberger exists to determine whether your particular clinical picture makes TMS a reasonable option.

The most common is pain or discomfort at or near the treatment site, which is temporary and usually stops after the first week of treatment. There is a rare risk of seizure, occurring in fewer than 0.1 percent of patients.
